February 2017 AERA has announced that it will partner with the March for Science to support the importance and value of science as a public good. AERA will be joining with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and dozens of other scientific societies from a broad cross section of disciplines, including the American Anthropological Association and the Consortium of Social Science Associations. The March for Science will take place on April 22 in Washington, D.C. In addition to the march in Washington, there will be rallies, open houses, children's science festivals, teach-ins, and other events taking place in public spaces around the world.
The March for Science is a nonpartisan event. The March seeks to promote science, foster public engagement, and advance the use of science and evidence in policymaking. The March is a celebration of science and of education and learning about science across all fields. The March is intended to galvanize the interest and support of the scientific community, policy leaders, and a breadth of publics.
“It is an important opportunity for AERA as a scholarly and scientific society to join with other individuals and organizations to send a message about the value of science to society and the significant contributions and discoveries made possible by the scientific enterprise,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “For those of us engaged in scientific inquiry, this is part of a continuing conversation to draw positive attention to the power of science and the value of using science and evidence-based research to inform policy and practice across sectors.”
