Linda Darling-Hammond is Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education Emeritus at Stanford University and President of the Learning Policy Institute (LPI), which she founded in 2015 to bring high-quality research evidence into education policy deliberations at the federal, state, and local levels. She is a past president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and recipient of its awards for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education and Relating Research to Practice, as well as recipient of AERA Division L's award for Lifetime Achievement.

Dr. Darling-Hammond began her career as a public school teacher and co-founded both a preschool and a public high school. She served as founding executive director of the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future, and, in 2008, served as the leader of President Barack Obama’s education policy transition team.

Her extensive body of research examines the policy and practice approaches that will ensure all children, especially the most vulnerable, have access to excellent teachers and empowering learning experiences. Among her more than 500 publications are a number of award-winning books, including The Right to Learn, Teaching as the Learning Profession, and The Flat World and Education: How America’s Commitment to Equity will Determine our Future.

Most recently, Dr. Darling-Hammond authored Empowered Educators: How High-Performing Systems Shape Teaching Quality Around the World. At LPI she is focusing in part on how to address U.S. teacher shortages by developing policy solutions that strengthen the profession. She also oversees research and policy efforts to enhance deeper learning and equity, including support for new state accountability, assessment, and improvement strategies under the Every Student Succeeds Act.
