The impact of class size on math and science achievement

FINAL REPORT:

I will use the Third International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) to discover the impact of class size on math and science achievement among middle-school and secondary-school students in ten countries. In each nation, I will further explore the intervening roles of curricular coverage and instructional practice as channels for the size-achievement connection. Applying specialized hierarchical linear models to estimate the contextural effects of size in each nation, I will also identify the role of the national policy environment as a context for the relation between size and achievement. This research will contribute to discussions of class size policy in the U.S., especially for the upper grades. In addition, my research will inform policy makers about the efficacy of reduced class size as a means to improve American students' relative standing in world math and science achievement.
