The AERA 2025 election opened on January 15, with voting conducted by electronic ballot. The election extends over a 30-day period, concluding February 13, at 11:59 p.m. PST. Read more

Site to Create Content for 2025 AERA i-Presentation Gallery Opens February 13; Training Sessions to Be Held March 5 and March 12
On February 13, the first-listed author of each paper to be presented during the 2025 AERA Annual Meeting—whether in a paper session, roundtable session, poster session, structured poster session, or a virtual i-Presentation—will receive an email invitation to create their presentation for display in the AERA i-Presentation Gallery. Read more

On January 14, President Joe Biden announced the recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which honors early career scholars who are engaged in federally-funded research. Read more

On January 17, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development released its 2025 Strategic Plan.  Read more
Biden Administration Issues Reports on Reducing Harassment in Federally Funded Research, Federal Evidence Agenda on Disability, Prior to Leaving Office

In the last month of President Joe Biden’s administration National Science and Technology Council, within the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, released two reports with guidance for federal agencies to reduce sexual harassment in federally funded research and building an evidence agenda on disability. Read more

AERJ Author Awarded TIRF Alatis Prize

Crissa Stephens, an independent scholar, has been named this year’s recipient of the TIRF James E. Alatis Prize for her 2024 American Educational Research Journal article "Invisible Policy Brokers: The Political Roles of Interpreters in Educational Policy Negotiations With Language Minoritized Mothers." Read more

In Memoriam

A. Wade Boykin, 77, died on January 11. He had been a professor and director of the graduate program in the Department of Psychology at Howard University. Boykin served as chair of the AERA Government Relations Committee and the Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award Committee.  Read more

David Goslin, 88, died on December 28. He served as president and chief executive officer of the American Institutes on Research. Goslin was an AERA Fellow. Read more

Iris Rotberg, 91, died on January 1. She was a professor at the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at George Washington University. Read more

AERA 1984-1985 President Lee Shulman, 86, died on December 30. He was the President Emeritus of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Shulman was an AERA Fellow and received AERA’s Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award. A full remembrance will be published in a future issue of Highlights.

Funding Opportunity—Spencer Initiative on AI and Education
The Spencer Initiative on AI and Education will fund research on AI, education, and learning that supports equitable educational use, development, and understanding of AI technologies. The foundation will fund new research through two existing programs: the Vision Grant Program and the Racial Equity Program. Learn more
